Balloon Launch at NWS
On Thursday January 28, the National Weather Service is hosting the Utah student AMS chapter for a weather balloon launch viewing. Although this is set up as an AMS activity, all are welcome! We will meet outside of INSCC at 2:30p for a 2:45p departure. At 3p we will be given a short tour of the forecast office before attending the launch at 4p. This is a fantastic opportunity for those interested in a career in operational meteorology. To make arrangements for carpooling, it is imperative that you let me know (via email: ellen.ramirez@utah.edu) if you'd like to attend but don't have transportation. If you plan to meet us there, the address is 2242 West North Temple. Estimated return time at the U is 4:30-5p.
Basketball Game
As our winter social event, we will be attending a basketball game as a group. Utah takes on Colorado State on Wednesday, February 3. The game begins at 6:00 pm, and we will meet outside of INSCC's east doors at 5:30 to walk over to the game. Tickets are free for students.
Outstanding Teacher/Teaching Assistant Nominations
Have you had (or do you currently have) a teacher or teaching assistant from the Atmospheric Sciences Department that you thought was outstanding? If so you should nominate that outstanding individual for an outstanding teacher or teaching assistant award!
Every year the College of Mines and Earth Sciences awards one teacher and one TA with this prestigious award. As students we can nominate one outstanding teacher and one outstanding TA from our department to be considered for this award. The qualifications are that the teacher and TA must have taught at least one class during the current academic year (Fall or Spring), and they must be outstanding.
Contact any one of the SAC representatives to make a nomination. Nominations must be in by March 1st, so don't delay!
SAC Representatives: Joel Lisonbee,Ben Foreback, Jon Tippetts

Weather Analysis Groups
Campus forecast groups will move away from the 5-day forecasts; rather it will become an opportunity to learn and improve weather analysis skills - once you become proficient at using various products to analyze the current weather - then forecasting becomes fairly straight forward. So the groups will learn weather analysis/observations and maybe do a 1-day forecast. Other changes may include: doing shifts in a daily 2 hour block in which anyone can show up at anytime for however long they want (so if you can only do it for 30 min - then you can still get a lot out of it) and doing away with shift sign ups (come when you want to come and as often as you'd like!).
These weather analysis are very important to your meteorology career beyond your classes. We can't emphasize enough that participating will not only help you in your class work, but also prepare you for a meteorologist/forecasting job - well before the 1/2 semester you get in your senior year before you graduate and start applying for jobs. This is an opportunity to be able to enhance your resume - at other schools with similar campus forecasting, students participate for 4 years and get a leg up on others in terms of experience. They can be a lot of fun - after you get over the initial hump in the beginning with learning the basics of the products. The graduate students are enthusiastic and want to help! So consider coming by or emailing me for more information. Please contact Ben Foreback or Jon Zawislak (jon.zawislak@utah.edu) for further information
